It seems to be the same with thoughts (especially memes based on ‘alternative facts’) and certain technologies (eg nuclear bombs). I suppose Lady M’s point is that we have to make the best of a bad job, but the awful thing is when we — that’s a collective ‘we’ of course!) — end up making the same mistake again and again.

Exactly – once a thing is done, there’s no going back- like you said with nuclear technologies or even biological ones, once they’re out there, you can no longer control how people use them or what for. You would think this would teach one to be a little more perceptive or at least “look” before one leaps, but never does one (both individuals and we as people) do it.
