  1. As always, Christie misdirects us mightily in a kind of double bluff! I also wonder if this is a covert nod to Holmes’ famous dictum, “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

    1. Oops, pressed SEND before I’d finished what I wanted to say. It was Francis Bacon who of course originally used that wording when he wrote that “Money is a great servant but a bad master.”


      1. It might well be a reference to Holmes–in the autobio, she acknowledges the influences of those books on her stories and the characters; and she may well have read Bacon too since she was a voracious reader.
