  1. We now know that the major pleasure hormone, the chemical messenger dopamine, is all about the anticipation of reward, not the reward itself. But Dickens talks about happiness, and I agree that it’s at its height when it comes about from an unexpected but pleasurable surprise—when a lesser reward is anticipated, say, or when it’s needed but not looked-for. And often it’s the giving, not the taking, of a gift that gives the greatest joy, especially when it’s received with due gratitude!

    1. Agreed–giving and seeing the receiver happy is definitely a huge source of happiness. But unexpected surprises can cheer one up tremendously too–especially when one has had a hard day or some such. I felt it myself when I surprise present arrived at the end of a tiring work day.
